Ambassador Case Study June 10

June 2010 Lab in a Lorry visits the Highlands and Islands

Schools across the Highlands and Islands have hosted the travelling Lab operated by the Institute of Physics.    The lab is deisgned to give young people aged 11-14 the opportunity to do experimental science the way it actually happens.

The lab contains 3 different physics based experiments which differ with ever tour.  Emxamples of the experiments include climate change, resonance, camera optics, hele shaw cell and scattering.

The experiments are all very interactive involving lots of doing, monitoring, touching and making.  Things can get quite messy at times and students are asked to where white coats to protect their clothing – making them feel like a real scientist.

The lorry couldn’t operate without the dedication of its volunteers.  STEM Ambassadors have taken part in the H&I tour this year prviding guidance to the students when working through the experiments and of course having fun along the way.  These scientists and Engineers also provide their own experience and insight, showing how science is used in the working world.

This tour has taken the Lab to schools in Highland, Moray, the Western Isles and Argyll and Bute, and it will hopefully visit Orkney and Shetland in the near future.

The Lab likes to visit schools it has never been to before so to request a visit please register here.
