5 things you do regularly in your job
  • Measured surveys of buildings and land
  • Building design work, using Computer Aided Design
  • Geometry and trigonometry in conjunction with survey and design work
  • Calculation of areas and volumes
  • Heat-loss calculations. Basic design work for building services
What made you decide to do this type of job? (teacher/ role model etc) I wanted a job that was always different, with new challenges, would never be boring, and would be one that combined art and science.
How did you get to where you are now? Good grades at school for Higher level exams; entry to university for degree course in Architecture; practical training in Architectural practices; studies for professional qualifications; experience.
What motivates you? A good standard of design, energy efficiency, and durability in the built environment.
Any other info? E.g. activities you have done with schools, what you can offer schools etc. I have exhibited at various Careers Conventions in Kirkwall, and helped run the K’NeX Challenge sessions in Orkney Schools with STEM North of Scotland.
