Jakki Ross

Trainee Quantity Surveyor, Morrison Construction, Moray

Jakki is currently working towards 2 HNCs in Construction Management & Quantity Surveying. She hopes to finish these in June and then go on to study at RGU for a BSc in Quantity Surveying.

5 things you do regularly in your job
  • Measure work
  • Liaise with Sub-contactors
  • Assess & complete payments
  • Liaise with Site Team
  • Maintain records
What made you decide to do this type of job? (teacher/ role model etc) I looked forward to a challenge in a male dominated industry with the possibility of full training and great opportunities for progression.
How did you get to where you are now? I started with Morrison Construction in 2008 and went to Inverness College to study HNCs in Quantity Surveying and Construction Management on a day release basis. Following successful completion of these courses I gained direct entry into 3rd year of the degree program at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. I now attend RGU one day a week and will gain a BSc (hons) at the end of my studying.
What motivates you? There is lots of opportunity for more responsibility and scope as my experience grows.
Any other info? E.g. activities you have done with schools, what you can offer schools etc. We have 2 activities (both Morrison kits) which we take to functions/schools and complete with young people. One is a bridge building task and the second is a theoretical city challenge. Both require problem solving and numeracy skills.
