Why is STEM important?

STEM is vital to our local economy

STEM skills play an important role in our local economy and will be vital to grow sectors such as life sciences and energy. However, fewer young people are enrolling in STEM subjects at school, college and university.

HIE is part of an initiative to reverse this trend through a STEM Partnership which aims to achieve an increase in the number of people attaining high levels of mathematics, science and ICT qualifications. HIE also works with the Scottish Government to highlight the importance of science in society to the public, with a particular focus on young people and those who influence them.

It is vital to the productivity of the region that our young people recognise where the study of STEM subjects can take them. Careers using science, technology, engineering and maths are among the best paid in Scotland.  Research from the Confederation of British Industry (2008) indicates that 92% of employers employ STEM skilled people yet only 13% of undergraduates in UK universities are taking STEM degrees. There is a substantial mismatch between demand and supply.

Raising the interest and awareness of STEM in terms of study and future career opportunities is a priority for HIE. In order for HIE to achieve this, the support of local businesses will be essential. By signing up for our STEM Ambassador programme, you can help to influence young people in their career choices. There are already a number of companies based in the Highlands and Islands who are at the forefront of world research, in particular renewable energy, marine science, and life sciences. It is important that local pupils are aware of these companies, so that they do not think that they need to leave the region to be involved in high quality research. Having a STEM Ambassador who goes into schools and talks to pupils is an ideal way for a company to raise their profile in the local community, and inspire youngsters who may become part of their workforce in future.
